CDS Brownbag: Programming PowerShell
John Syre, May 13, 2009, 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Location: Arnold Bldg, M2-A823
Abstract
You may have heard of Powershell, even know something of it (as in you attended
the first Introduction to Powershell presentation), but now you want to know how to
program in it. This presentation will show you how to set up Powershell, write programs to
do 'real work', customize your environment, leverage the .Net framework and
extend the already powerful capabilities of Powershell. But you may ask,
I already know Perl and/or Python why learn Powershell. Or why not just use VBScript or C#.
Perl and Python are great but I always like to use the 'tool inherent to the
environment' if I can and Powershell will be everywhere in the future. In addition,
major vendors are delivering support for Powershell, VMware and F5 Networks
to name a couple. VBScript is powerful but why do in ten lines what you can do in
one or two. Besides Powershell can directly access .Net Assemblies whereas VBScript cannot.
C# is indeed very powerful and if you are doing large complex programs, stay with it. But
for the common, every day tasks that always come along, Powershell can't be beat in the
Microsoft world.
