CDS Brownbag: The Consortium Web Application: A Case Study
Paul Litwin,
September 9, 2009, 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Location: Arnold Bldg, M4-A805/A817
Abstract
The Consortium Web project is a collaboration between the Director's Office, the FHCRC Library, and CDS to search for and produce lists of the publications authored by the Cancer Consortium's members. CDS' part of the project included some interesting challenges and use of technology, including the use of Devexpress ASP.NET grid control and SQL Server 2008 Reporting Service's support for rich text formatting. During this presentation, Paul will share his experiences, code, and approach to solving the challenges.

CDS Brownbag: Upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005/2008: Lessons Learned
Don Brown & Rick Westcott,
August 12, 2009, 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Location: Arnold Bldg, M4-A805/A817
Abstract
Mainstream support for SQL Server 2000 is already gone, and it’s time to upgrade those existing SQL Server 2000 systems before you fall two versions behind! What are the pitfalls to avoid? What is the best plan of attack? Will an upgrade bring everything to a screeching halt? This Brownbag will discuss lessons learned from a recent SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008 upgrade/ data migration. Topics discussed will include developing an effective migration plan, available upgrade/migration tools and other techniques to make your upgrade as seamless as possible.

CDS Brownbag: Lessons Learned in Migrating DTS Packages to SSIS
Don Brown, June 10, 2009, 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Location: Arnold Bldg, M2-A823

Abstract
SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), the new data transformation tool in SQL Server 2005 and 2008, is here to stay, but what about all those old DTS packages from SQL 2000? Do I have to start from scratch? Can I still use my SQL 2000 DTS? How do I get up and running quickly with SSIS? In this talk, we will discuss the pros and cons of migrating DTS packages to SSIS, techniques to develop fast SSIS packages, and some of the trickier aspects of SSIS such as global variables and calling packages dynamically from stored procedures. This talk represents lessons I learned (the hard way, of course) migrating legacy SQL 2000 DTS packages to both SQL 2005 and SQL 2008.

CDS Brownbag: Programming PowerShell
John Syre, May 13, 2009, 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM
Location: Arnold Bldg, M2-A823
Abstract
You may have heard of Powershell, even know something of it (as in you attended the first Introduction to Powershell presentation), but now you want to know how to program in it. This presentation will show you how to set up Powershell, write programs to do 'real work', customize your environment, leverage the .Net framework and extend the already powerful capabilities of Powershell. But you may ask, I already know Perl and/or Python why learn Powershell. Or why not just use VBScript or C#. Perl and Python are great but I always like to use the 'tool inherent to the environment' if I can and Powershell will be everywhere in the future. In addition, major vendors are delivering support for Powershell, VMware and F5 Networks to name a couple. VBScript is powerful but why do in ten lines what you can do in one or two. Besides Powershell can directly access .Net Assemblies whereas VBScript cannot. C# is indeed very powerful and if you are doing large complex programs, stay with it. But for the common, every day tasks that always come along, Powershell can't be beat in the Microsoft world.
